Color Your Site Interesting--Please
[August 21] Some interesting commentary on the use of color as a
promotional vehicle on Web sites appears in a ClickZ
<http://www.clickz.com/> article by Rob Frankel, principal at the
Frankel-Anderson ad agency.
He expresses amazement that ABC TV reportedly paid a consultant $40
million to tell it that black letters on a yellow background
really stand out.
"Are you and I in the wrong business or not?" he writes. "Forty million
smackers to tell some New York knuckleheads what the lowly bumble bee
has known for years: black on yellow is high contrast and certainly
attracts attention--if not other bumble bees."
He goes on to say that "color is REALLY important when it comes to
marketing, identity, advertising and Web design. It helps determine your
corporate personality and very often, the rate at which your message is
assimilated and comprehended by your viewers."
Various examples of difficult to read color combinations are given
including blue type on a black background and even worse, cyan on
gray. If you occasionally think your graphic designers are off the
wall, it's an interesting piece to check out. After all, the longer
people hang out at your Web site, the more likely they are to click
on an ad banner.
