1.1 PROMISES, PROMISES
Before VCs get excited about your company, they have to see the
potential for at least $100 million a year in revenue from a first
product, as well as legitimate ancillary markets beyond your target.
And it'll take more than a quote from Forrester to convince them of
it. (They got burned by that one before.) At this month's Coffee &
DoughNets, we take up the topic of "Sizing and Validating Market
Opportunities," where we'll explore practical techniques for
analyzing your real business potential. Paying customers are the
ultimate form of market validation, of course, but, there are other
ways for startups to build a credible case. C&D will be Thursday,
May 30, 7:00 AM, at the Capitol Hilton in Washington, DC, featuring
a panel that will include Jonathan Silver, Managing Director of Core
Capital Partners; Paul Finke, President and CEO of Yafo Networks;
and moderator Andrew Sherman of McDermott, Will & Emery.

1.2 KILLED HIM A BAR, WHEN HE WAS ONLY THREE
We've gotta add our congratulations to those heaped on our fearless
leader, Mario Morino, at last night's Greater Washington High Tech
Awards. He was named a "Technology Legend," along with William
Haseltine of Human Genome Sciences and Earle Williams, formerly of
BDM. Quite an honor, and well deserved in our less than humble
opinion. (Aside to Raul Fernandez: Nice intro.)

2.1 OPTIVIEW'S MODEM SIMULATOR
(Dulles, VA) OptiView Technologies, a provider of Web content
optimization services, unveiled its 56k modem simulator called
PageRacer. The free tool enables visitors on faster Internet
connections to view Web pages through a simulated 56k connection.
According to Zona Research, 80% of users access the Internet using a
dial-up connection, which causes them to abandon some websites.
PageRacer uses a side-by-side viewing configuration to demonstrate
the difference between downloading standard and optimized Web
content. One frame displays a typical 56k modem connection for any
site a visitor chooses; the other downloads the same page after it
is streamlined in real-time using automatic optimization technology.

2.2 STAGETOOLS' 3D CHARTS
(Middleburg, VA) StageTools introduced MovingChart, a tool for
adding animated, 3D charts and graphs to video shows. Data can be
imported from any spreadsheet or text file to create bar, area,
line, marker, and pie-style charts. The charts are fully
anti-aliased and can be drawn over a moving video background. To
speed the design process, producers can preview the motion in
real-time without any rendering.
