News About The Netpreneur Program

1. BE A VIRTUAL PRESENTER AT MAVA
For the first time ever, netpreneurs seeking investment capital can now virtually present to investors attending the Mid-Atlantic Venture Fair (MAVA) in November using the EDIE-Online Web site. This new opportunity for netpreneurs, made possible by New Vision Financial, MAVA and the Netpreneur Program, allows registered attendees to view information about companies in the Greater Washington region. Company information for those virtual presenters who are accepted will be displayed on the EDIE-Online site for 90 days, exclusively for consideration by registered MAVA attendees.

In order to maximize the value to the investors and the virtual presenters, all MAVA attendees will receive a handout listing the companies presenting via EDIE-Online and a user ID and password for access to the EDIE-Online system. Investors will have the ability to: - view information and obtain hardcopies about netpreneur companies not presenting or exhibiting, but which have submitted virtual presentations. - review information and slide presentations about companies physically presenting.
- review information about exhibiting companies.
- view information about PIN companies not presenting or exhibiting, but which have been screened for possible investment.

EDIE-Online (Electronic Data for Investors and Entrepreneurs) is an Internet-based information system, developed by New Vision Financial and BTG, Inc., that uses the Web to bring together small businesses seeking capital with investors located throughout the United States and overseas. The EDIE-Online search mechanism is a custom search engine which allows the investor to specify individual search criteria.

The cost for a virtual presentation is $150 and the entire fee is paid to New Vision Financial. To be considered as a virtual presenter, submit a form for screening at the Netpreneur Exchange Website. Initial screening will be conducted by the Netpreneur Program and New Vision Financial will issue final approvals.

2. MARIO MORINO TO SPEAK AT CPCUG
One of this region's best kept secrets is its growing concentration of Internet, telecommunications, software, services and information and content organizations. On Tuesday, September 9, the Netpreneur Program's own Mario Morino will appear at the Capital PC User Group (CPCUG) Internet SIG meeting to discuss the inherent strengths of this infrastructure, the social and economic dynamics affecting this base and areas of innovation and expansion. The discussion will project what a "networked-community" could mean for our region's future -- our lives, work, learning, and even recreation. The meeting will be held at Washington Gas Light Corporation in Springfield, Virginia at 7:00pm.

3. MENTION THE NETPRENEUR PROGRAM AND GET $50 OFF AT NETEXPO
(Washington, DC) The mid-Atlantic's first locally-produced expo and conference for business users of the Internet, NetExpo Washington, will take place October 7-9 at the Washington Convention Center, alongside the 14th annual MultiCom Communications Expo and Conference. Seminar programs at the conference follow eight tracks including Web design, e-commerce, Internet marketing/management, electronic publishing and more. Normally you would have to pay $495 for a three-day conference pass, but you've got friends in high places. Mention the Netpreneur Program and receive a $50 discount. Individual sessions are $79 each and rates are going up after September 22. Special events at NetExpo and MultiCom include keynote speaker Bob Beran, president of Bell Atlantic Internet Solutions, in a free session and "Ask the Web Experts!" featuring Raul Fernandez of Proxicom, Kurt Baumann of Indigo Group Omnimedia and Susan Bowen of ANS. This free panel session, moderated by Hank Dearden III of 3D Technologies, will provide an open forum to discuss Web and Internet publishing issues. Over 150 exhibitors include regional netpreneurs like washingtonpost.com, Digital City, USWeb DC and Clark Internet Services. Attendees can also stop in at the Internet and Intranet Lab and see the latest technology in electronic commerce, "push" and "pull" marketing tactics, content design and development, Internet advertising and transaction-based compensation. The Lab is sponsored by EPI Communications and EPI Systems of Rockville, MD.

4. WHAT'S THE BUZZ? HUFFING AND PUFFING ABOUT ONLINE CHAT
Christina E. Bublick of CEB & Associates wants the best chat software to use in a virtual community she is developing on cigars and cigar smoking. Simple enough question, right? So she turns to Talk the Talk, the Netpreneur's discussion group. Sure, she got suggestions, but the question also sparked a fiery discussion about the best techniques for online communications and community development. With apologies to Freud, a cigar may sometimes be a lever for some pretty fascinating discussion. Did tempers flare? Nah, we just wanted to run the fire allusion into the ground, although several people definitely threw cold water on chat for certain applications. We suggest you hotfoot it over and join Talk the Talk to check out the archives of the discussion, and maybe fan the flames a little. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Funding & Finance News

1. SPACEVEST INVESTS IN CONSTELLATION COMMUNICATIONS
(Reston, VA) SpaceVest, an equity capital organization which focuses on investing in small and medium-sized privately-held companies in the space industry, recently completed a follow-on investment in Constellation Communications, Inc. (CCI). CCI was established in 1991 to design, develop, implement and operate a LEO satellite communications system for affordable mobile and fixed-site communications services (voice, data, fax, etc.) to areas throughout the world where telecommunications infrastructure is inadequate and people are desperate for dial tone. On July 1, 1997, the US Federal Communications Committee granted a license to CCI enabling it to implement the system and operate it on a global basis. CCI is one of only five US companies to hold such a license. (Courtesy of Capital Growth Interactive)

Regional News

(Vienna, VA) Cable & Wireless, Inc. (CWI), has received approval to offer local phone service in New Jersey and Virginia. CWI was the first interexchange carrier to offer combined local and long distance service in New York City in 1995. Since then, CWI has launched similar offerings in 11 major markets, located primarily within California and New York State. The move lets CWI offer its business customers a single point of contact for all telecommunications services.

3. JONES EXPANDS CABLE MODEM SERVICE
Jones Communications will roll out cable modems in Prince William County, VA. The company launched similar high-speed data operations in Alexandria some 18 months ago. The Jones Internet Channel service, using one-way cable modems with telephone return paths, will cost subscribers $29.95 a month plus a one-time $29.95 charge for installation. According to Cable World, although Jones was the first major US company to offer high-speed data service commercially, it has fallen behind most of its counterparts due to rebuild delays and marketing problems in Alexandria. Jones aims to extend service to Reston, VA, early next year and then to four Maryland counties later in 1998. The move into new areas also comes as Jones finally starts full-fledged marketing of its two-way cable modem service in Alexandria.
